Signs of Insecurity In A Ministerial Leader: How To Get Delivered.

Apart of being a human is to have a struggle or if you are like most, many struggles. No matter how anointed, appointed and articulate you are, that anointing cost you. I tell people the reason I have been able to write so many books, is because God put me in the middle of many struggles in order to develop me.

This blog post is meant to help someone get delivered, or if you suspect your friend, your leader, your family member struggles with an area of insecurity you know the signs and how to pray that they be delivered.

The reality is as much as we honor leaders, they are susceptible to soul wounds more than the average person. If you love your leader whomever he or she maybe, you want to know how speak life to them and pray for the warring of their souls, so that they may do the work of the ministry in full strength not in weakness.

Maybe you’re like me you are a leader, but if you would admit you have had a struggle. I can write this article because I have been there and been delivered. However you can’t get delivered from what you don’t acknowledge. The reality is an insecure leader is dangerous to not only a body of believers, but to the whole body of Christ as a whole. We must see the demonic assignment of the enemy in order to gain victory. Take heart beloved, you and your leader are loved by God and He desires that His leader no matter their title or position, He wants them free in Jesus name.

First let us define what insecurity is. Insecurity is the state of being feeling threatened; lack of protection. In means lack of confidence. Most leaders will never admit that they lack confidence, but the reality is you can be confident in one area and not in the other. Just because a person can preach well doesn’t mean they are confident. Insecurity means lack of confidence or assurance; self-doubt. Now let’s talk about signs of insecurity, they are in no particular order and this is not an all-inclusive list.

Signs of Insecurity In A Ministerial Leader

Competitive Spirit: This is the individual who views the ministry platform as a competition.

Competition means the act of competing; rivalry for supremacy. You know these individuals view the platform as competition because they use their ministry platform to speak against other ministers, preachers, and churches. We will talk further about this in a bit.  They may not reveal names but they make small suggestions and statements in such a way, you know exactly what and who they are talking about.

Remember saints, the Holy Spirit never competes against Himself. If a minister is using a Holy platform to openly speak against another minister, they are not being led by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit NEVER sows discord. Discord means to plant seeds of division. In church there should never be an "us" versus “them” mentality.

Proverbs 6:16-19 (NKJV)

16 These six things the Lord hates,

Yes, seven are an abomination to Him:

17 A proud look,

A lying tongue,

Hands that shed innocent blood,

18 A heart that devises wicked plans,

Feet that are swift in running to evil,

19 A false witness who speaks lies,

And one who sows discord among brethren

Using spiritual gifts inappropriately in an attempt intimidate, manipulate and or control others: this is self-explanatory. People are going to be intimidated by leaders to some degree particularly when they walk in the authority of God. However using the gifts of the spirit, prophecy, word of knowledge, gifts of wisdom to threaten or speak word curses over someone else’s life is not being deep this is witchcraft.

Secretly being intimidated by someone else’s spiritual gifting, but you don’t admit it, you just talk bad about them to others.

Comparison: whenever you compare yourself to another person, you secretly devalue your own self.

This is a big one repeatedly speaking against other churches and what you think they are or are not doing. Speaking against other apostles and prophets in the same arena as you. This a sign of secretly despising another’s minister. Inability to be happy for another ministry.

Being presumptuous-meaning you assume that someone is doing something wrong. Character assassination.

Psalm 19:13 (KJV)

13 Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins; let them not have dominion over me: then shall I be upright, and I shall be innocent from the great transgression

Inability to handle criticism. Leaders will be criticized whether that criticism is just or unjust, however it shows insecurity when you constantly need to go back and forth with someone to prove who you are.

TD Jakes said, “how others feel about me is none of my business.”

Excessive focus on self, which leads to self-promotion, boasting and pride. It means this person has a constant need for validation. This is displayed when a leader constantly and repeatedly talks about their accomplishments, their anointing, and there overall success. There is nothing wrong with feeling good about yourself and confident in being the vessel of God, but when you take up an excessive amount of time talking about yourself, you are guilty of idolatry. Meaning you want to be worshipped and idolized. The reality is it is not about us, it is about God, He gets the glory we are the empty vessels He uses.

Isaiah 42:8 God declared that He would not share His glory with another.

To constantly talk about you, what you have done, how many hours you pray and fast etc, how wonderful of a great preacher you are, only shows deep insecurity because there is a secret need for validation.

Spiritual abuse and controlling spirits, this is a big one. I won’t have time to go into detail. However if you can’t do anything less you get permission from your leader then that is a controlling spirit. I have heard of people who couldn’t go out of town until they told their pastor first. They couldn’t receive a prophetic word until it was passed through their pastor, they couldn’t date or marry lest their pastor approved. They couldn’t have friends outside of their church, etc etc, that is a controlling spirit.

Excessive or inappropriate use of social media: Social media is not the platform to attempt to address another leader or anyone for that matter.

 Galatians 6:1 (KJV)

6 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Matthew 18:14-17New King James Version (NKJV)

14 Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.

15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother.

16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’[a]

17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.

The real agenda is to cause division and discord amongst other Christians and for the person initiating the division to gain more followers. This person is secretly envious and jealous of another.

Excessive use of social media, meaning you had a healing services so you post 100 different things about that healing service on Facebook. Remember excessive self-promotion is a sign of insecurity. Let God promote you.

Psalm 75:6-7(KJV)

6 For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south.

7 But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another.

Excessive focus on “haters” and people who don’t like you. Don’t buy the hater t-shirts. Constant talk about your enemies, who you think is jealous of you, wearing the haters t-shirt is like walking around with a sign on your forehead saying, “I am VERY, VERY, EXTREMELY insecure.”

Inability to receive wise counsel, meaning you think you are right and when a wise counselor (not anyone or everyone), but a wise counselor points out you are wrong you can’t receive it. Read Exodus 18 about how Moses received wise counseling. Great leaders need more than great friends, they need great wise counselors that are not afraid or intimidated by their anointing to tell them the truth.

Baby Jesus syndrome- this is not a diagnosable mental illness, but if I had it my way, I would add it to the DSM IV. Meaning having a false sense of responsibility, wearing yourself down to an early grave because you refuse to delegate authority. Secretly believing people can’t hear or receive from anyone but you. Honestly believing that if you don’t help them or fix them they can’t get fixed. Again read Exodus 18. Feelings as though you need to be accessible at all times.

Using your intellectual prowess to debate or speak the word of God in a way to confound or make another minister feel small or trapped by your words. Intellectual prowess is exceptional valor, bravery, or ability, especially in combat or battle, exceptional or superior ability, skill, or strength: his prowess as a public speaker. It is rooted in a spirit of pride.

This is someone who has a great knowledge of scripture and the word of God, but they use the word in unjust means. The word of God is not up for debate. You either come with the humility of a teacher or the pride of a debater.

2 Timothy 2:13-15 (CEB)

13 If we are disloyal, he stays faithful”

because he can’t be anything else than what he is.

Speak, instruct, and act correctly

14 Remind them of these things and warn them in the sight of God not to engage in battles over words that aren’t helpful and only destroy those who hear them.
15 Make an effort to present yourself to God as a tried-and-true worker, who doesn’t need to be ashamed but is one who interprets the message of truth correctly.

Titus 3:9 (KJV)

9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.

Vain means self-serving and self-seeking.

Pride, Pride, Pride is a sign of insecurity believe it or not.

Proverbs 16:18-19 (KJV)

18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

It is not a confidence issue rather what or who you put your trust in issue. You don’t need to grow in confidence but grow in God. We are insecure when we keep trying to put our confidence in flesh. You can try to gain confidence in many things of the flesh, (accomplishments, degrees, platforms, people). However you keep coming up short, because God will never allow anything or anyone to share glory with Him.

Philippians 3:2-8 (NKJV)

2 Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the mutilation!

3 For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit,[a] rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh,

4 though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so:

 5 circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee;

6 concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless.

7 But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.

8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ

How To Get Free:

  • Acknowledge: You can’t get free from a problem you don’t admit you have. You must sit down and be honest with yourself. Admit there is an area of insecurity. (basically humble yourself before God)
  • Repent: Repent doesn’t just mean to ask God for forgive but it also means to change directions.
  • If you have offended someone else, you must do the hard part and ask for their forgiveness.

  • Renounce any soul tie connected to the insecurity. Remember I said insecurity can also be rooted in needing the validation and approval from people. Renounce that soul connection and be free in Jesus name.

Matthew 5:22-24 (KJV)

22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

23 Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee;

24 Leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift.

  • Still seek counseling, for deep rooted issues. We must address the underlying issues, depending on the depth of the resentment, insecurity.
  • Ask for Holy Spirit for deliverance from all soul wounds.

Hebrews 12:14 (NKJV)

14 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord:
