Wisdom speaks: New business, budgets and must haves.

​When I first started my business it was a leap of faith. I had to learn as I grew. One thing I have learned is that it is okay to receive wisdom from others but at the end of the day you have to do what works for YOU.

We are living in the day where everyone can claim to be an expert.

We assume because people have a following then they must be successful. NOT TRUE! So in learning my business, I also learned basic wisdom. (what works for me)

1. I don't take business advice from people who are not actually in a successful business. Changing businesses every six months doesn't qualify. What you did 10 years ago doesn't qualify either. Also I glean from people who have a similar business or a private practice. Believe it or not the same rules do NOT apply. For example therapist tend not to depend on social media as much to grow their businesses. We tend have to build our businesses with many old school methods because of HIPPA and protecting YOUR privacy.

2. Opinions, opinions, opinions. Every has them, doesn't mean they are relevant for your business.


3. Everyone has a strong opinion about what you should do in your business but unless whoever THEY, are going to pay the bill, learn to BUDGET based upon what your life and business needs. Having a business doesn't stop YOUR bills. You also have to prioritize needs versus wants, when and how to invest in your self and your business. For example I still have a car payment, a whole house, an office space etc, insurance for my business, and a PhD I am paying for so no spending a couple dollars on what is NOT going to make me or break me right now is NOT a priority. Doesn't mean I don't want it, but it's called later. I tried on a 489 dollar watch today. It was beautiful. Can I afford it yes? Did I buy it? Absolutely NOT! Will I get it, sure maybe next year but it's called having my priorities in place. I encourage you to make a detailed budget of what you are spending and have a detail list of what you absolutely need now versus what you can wait on. Save, save, and save.

4. If after starting my business you have asked me for money, attempted to borrow money, attempted to cheat me out of some money (yes this has actually happened TWICE), had a cashapp asking for donations or money......ummmm you are not in a position to give advice on how someone else should spend THEIR money.

5. Finally having a business is amazing, fun but it can be exhausting. I am learning to be extremely organized, say no, stick to my boundaries and know that waiting is okay. Ultimately God is in the details.

6. It's okay to receive wisdom but that wisdom should also come with discernment. If you are not a tither, you probably are broke. Although I have been broke a time or two in my life. (okay a whole, whole lot) I don't receive financial wisdom from broke people.
